BIOGRAPHY
A trained publicist, Ava DuVernay decided, in 2006, to go behind the camera after directing Saturday Night Life , a short film retracing the night of a single mother. It was two years later that the filmmaker produced, wrote and shot her first feature film, This Is Life , a documentary on a hip-hop movement. She then continued to direct musical documentaries for television.

In 2010, Ava DuVernay signed her first feature-length fiction film with I Will Follow , in which she retraces the journey of a young woman, who, helped by twelve visitors, grieves. Two years later, the director won the best film award at Sundance for her film Middle Of Nowhere . After trying her hand at the “series” format with the direction of an episode of Scandal , she returned to cinema with Selma , a biopic which follows Martin Luther King’s fight for the right to vote for all citizens. She directs, among others, David Oyelowo (in the role of Martin Luther King), Tom Wilkinson and Carmen Ejogo
