Body found in car of missing Darwin River woman Karen Kelly

HUMAN remains have been found in a car - owned by missing Darwin River woman Karen Kelly - after it was pulled out of a river near her home late yesterday.

Detective Superintendent Richard Bryson, of the Major Crime Division, last night said the green Toyota Corolla Seca sedan was found in water just off Leonino Rd in Darwin River.

Det Sup Bryson said the car was pulled out by a tow truck late yesterday, the NT News said.

"An inspection of the vehicle led to the discovery of human remains," he said.

"The vehicle is believed to be that of missing person Karen Margaret Kelly."

The mother-of-three from Darwin River was last seen on April 18, 2010.

Police said the remains would be forensically tested to determine their identity and possible cause of death.

"Her family has been apprised of the latest developments and police investigations are continuing," Det Supt Bryson said last night.

Ms Kelly's daughter, Ashli Brook, did not want to comment last night.

Sources alerted the NT News to plain-clothes detectives getting the car pulled from the water late yesterday afternoon.

Two unmarked police cars blocked either side of the crossing before a City Wreckers tow-truck arrived and pulled the vehicle from the water, around 6pm.

A third marked police car was also parked by the river's edge.

Plain-clothes detectives could also be seen walking around the river's edge.

Investigations are continuing into the incident.
