How Did Stevie Wonder Go Blind?
Stevie was born six weeks prematurely, so he had to be kept in an incubator. Stevie ended up with a condition called Retinopathy of Prematurity on account of the high oxygen levels. Retinopathy of Prematurity or ROP comes when the growth of the eyes stops, and the retinas go detached, causing blindness. It happens when abnormal blood vessels spread through the retina. There were many rumors regarding if Wonder is truly blind. In 2010, when Paul McCartney knocked a mic stand over when performing 'Hey Jude at the White House, Stevie was seen catching the stand as it was about to fall. Also, in 2019, Shaquille O'Neal said about how Stevie noticed him when he stood silently near the musician. In an Inside the NBA episode, he narrated the incident, saying that he stood next to Stevie, who promptly greeted him by saying, "What's up Shaq? The truth is Stevie is really blind. As Gossip Cop reported, Stevie took off his glasses when giving his acceptance speech in 1989 when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His eyes seemed seriously damaged, which is proof of the same. When he was 10 years old, Stevie learned how to play the piano, drums, and harmonica. Stevie's music career started when he was still quite young. In 1961, when Stevie was just 11 years old, he sang his own composition, "Lonely Boy," to Ronnie White of the Miracles. How Did Stevie Wonder Lose His Sight?
In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Stevie spoke about his condition. He said that he was premature, and his doctor didn't know what was known now about the right amount of oxygen, so Stevie was given too much, and an area of his eyes was destroyed. He added that a girl who was born 1 minute before him actually died as she couldn't withstand that much oxygen. When asked if he was mad at the doctor for such a mistake, Stevie said that he knew the intent was not to harm him. He explained how his mom truly meant everything to him. Though blind, Stevie is a very talented musician and singer.
