Disturbing footage has shown the chilling moment a teen was chased down a Melbourne street by two machete-wielding schoolboys shortly before his death.
Pasawm Lyhym died after he was stabbed near Sunshine Station in the city’s west at around 3.45pm on Thursday afternoon.
The 16-year-old, who moved to Australia with his family as refugees from Myanmar, was confronted on a suburban street before fleeing as his assailants followed.
Now, video has emerged showing two teenagers – one still wearing a school bag and tie – running down the street in broad daylight armed with large knives.
Police say two other boys, both 16, were injured during the altercation, with one treated at the scene and the other taken to hospital.
On Friday, a 17-year-old boy was arrested in relation to the investigation, however Victoria Police have revealed he was released without charge the following morning.
Another 18-year-old male from Burnside was also interviewed by police but released without charge, with further investigations underway.
Local leaders have told 9 News they want a weapons amnesty as a result of the death, which occurred amid a spike in children carrying knives.
Detective Superintendent Janet Stevenson said investigators believe the incident involved two groups from two different schools.
“They are schoolchildren around the 15 or 16-year-old mark and they know each other,” she said.
“They’ve met down near the Sunshine bus station and that’s where an altercation has taken place.”
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said investigators continuing to search for a third boy and urged him to come forward.
“Detectives are still working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and the motivation for the altercation,” she said.
David Lord, the principal of Staughton College, where Pasawm was a student, said the school community was reeling in the wake of his death.
“The Staughton College community is shocked at the senseless death of one of our students yesterday at Sunshine,” he said.
“We are wrapping our arms around the family and friends of that student and ensuring that students and staff have all the support they need.”
