On August 54, 1982, Martha Elba was bornHigareda Cervantes, in Villahermosa, Tobasco, Mexico. She was conceived by actress Martha Cervantes’ mother and artist and therapist Jose Luis Higareda. There’s a clear indication that she’s dedicated to her mother’s name and passion and was born into a family with art running through its veins, as her sister Miriam Higareda is also an actress.
Martha’s journey into the film industry began at an early age when she began acting on stage, delighting audiences with dance, jazz, flamenco, tap and folklore. In her quest to spread her tentacles and gain more experience, at fourteen she left the local area where she grew up and moved to Mexico City, where she landed performances in plays such as Little Woman and Don Juan .
She enrolled at El Tecnologico de Monterreycollege when she was only 15 years old and majored in communications, but later changed her major to performing arts. Her sheer determination to succeed drove her to school in the mornings, back to drama school in the evenings, and performing in the theater on weekends to build her career and make ends meet. A year later, after she settled in town, her mother and sister would come to town and attend drama school with her.With little experience and notoriety at her theater and acting school, she made her first television appearance as a presenter on the Disney Channels show entitled Zapping Zone . Her biggest film break would have been Y Tu Mama Tambien but she had to be removed because she was underage and there were nude scenes that had to be portrayed in the film.
In 2002 her big payday came when she landed a starring role in a Fernando Sarinana directed and titled Amarte Duele with Luis Fernando Pena and Alfonso Herrera. The widely circulated film became a box-office hit, which launched her acting career and earned her the title of “Mexican Sweetheart”. Her impressive role as the female lead in the film earned her a Silver Goddess Award as well as an MTV Movies Favorite Actress Award.
She’s been at the top of her game since her debut film. In 2003, she starred in a Mexican TV show called Falling in Love on TV Azteca. In 2006, she starred in an award-winning film called Sexo, Amor Y Otras Perversions , where she starred alongside Martha Cristiana, Fernando Sarfati and Amara Villafuerte. The role she played in the film earned her another Silver Goddess Award. Another film she acted in the same year was titled Fuera del Cielo which earned her a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the Mexican Academy Awards.
The year 2007 was a better year for the Mexican actress as she showed in a film called Nina’s Mal – produced by Columbia Pictures and directed by Fernando Sarinana. Her aesthetic of an unusual haircut and fashion statement in the film would become a trend for her team fans in Mexico, who were mostly teenagers. That same year, she starred in her debut American film, titled Frontier.
At the time the film was showing in FilmMarket, she met Graig Shapiro, who would advise her to move to Los Angeles. She took the advice and found her way to Hollywood in 2008, where she auditioned and studied screenwriting and starred in a David Ayer film called Street Kings , starring Keanu Reeves and Forest Whitaker.
When Martha Higareda had gained a lot of experience in the US, she moved back to Mexico, but not without her three screenplays finished. At 25, she produced her first independent film entitled Te Presento a Laura , in which she had a starring role as Laura in the film. The film was well received, making the top ten at the box office for ten consecutive weeks. Becoming a filmmaker was a dream for Martha Higareda.
