Ralph Lauren is a fashion maestro who was dissatisfied with the way men dressed in the 1960s and decided to change that by creating a stylish look for which he is now well known. He is also known to be the CEO of Ralph Lauren Corporation and a philanthropist.
He had a humble beginning as a young child and was not as wealthy as most of the kids in his school. He reportedly wore a tennis sweater while his classmates wore leather jackets to school and took part-time jobs to fund his predilection for designer clothes.

Ralph Lauren is a revolutionary fashion designer Ralph Lifshitz was born into the family of Frank and Frieda on October 14, 1939 in Bronx, New York. Both of his parents are from Belarus and are emigrants who had four children of which he was the third. Her family lived in poverty and all her siblings had to share the same room. His father couldn’t provide better as he was just a painter of Jewish descent. Ralph grew up in the Mosholu Parkway boroughs but changed his last name in high school to “Lauren” due to frequent teasing from their classmates. He did it alongside one of his brothers.
Many would say he had a sense of fashion from birth, however, that’s not entirely true. As a young boy, he was interested in sports activities and thought of becoming a basketball player. However, things changed when he visited a wealthy friend whose house contained a separate dressing room. Fascinated by the design of the coin, he decided to become rich. He started saving money to buy designer clothes and was inspired by renowned fashion icons such as Fred Astaire and Cary Grant.
He attended DeWitt Clinton High School and Baruch College in Manhattan for his education and although he had a fondness for fashion, he did not study it in college. He went to study business but dropped out after two years of study.
Business career
After dropping out, he started working at BrooksBrothers – a men’s clothing store located in Manhattan. Previously, he enlisted in the military where he served for a number of years. After working with Brooks Brothers for a few years, he left and started working at Rivetz & Co. as he gained knowledge of the trade.
Ralph was then employed by Beau Brummell in 1967 where he started his own brand of fashion merchandise. He began by designing and producing links larger than was possible at the time with financial assistance from Brumell. He sold his ties in department stores and achieved huge success. His success in this business encouraged him to embark on the manufacture of men’s clothing. Its design was a mixture of American and English style, blended in an elegant way. It has become popular for these designs too.
In 1971, he began making designer clothes for women. The same year, he opened his first store in Beverly Hills, California. Over the years, it has expanded to produce children’s clothing, household items, footwear, among others. It has also expanded its number of stores to over 110 in the United States, plus 1,300 stores. As his business grew, it went public in 1977.
Awards and Other Efforts
To his credit, Ralph Lauren has won two or three awards, such as the COTY Design Awards (seven times) and the Lifetime Achievement Awards. He was also voted Designer of the Year in 1996, among other honors and awards. Ralph was so successful because he paid attention to the smallest details. he ensured that his clothes were top quality and maintained strict control over the brand he painstakingly created. He created the Ralph Lauren company from these principles in 1967. The company manages the various brands that Ralph manufactures, such as Polo Ralph Lauren, Ralph Lauren Collection, Double RL, among others.
He is also a philanthropist who likes to give to the less privileged. He founded the Polo Ralph Lauren Foundation which deals in particular with education, health care, the needs of less privileged communities. He also created the Ralph Lauren Cancer Center.

They married on December 20, 1964 and have been together ever since. The couple have three children together. Andrew, born in 1974; David, born in 1971 and Dylan born in 1969. His children are largely successful in the fields of their choice; David has taken over the family business and is an executive at Ralph Lauren Corporations. Andrew is a filmmaker and actor, while Dylan is the owner of a company called Candy Bar in New York.
