Richard Lynn Carpenter is an American singer, record producer, composer, and musical arranger. The artist along with his sister Karen formed half of the sibling duo The Carpenters. He has had various roles including record producer, arranger, pianist, keyboardist, lyricist and composer, and on harmony vocals joining Karen.

Richard Carpenter: early life, education, family
Richard Lynn Carpenter was born at Grace-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut. Also, his sister Karen was later raised in the same hospital where. His parents were Harold Bertram Carpenter and Agnes Reuwer Tatum. Carpenter regularly played the piano, while his younger sister Karen played baseball outdoors. He and Karen always enjoyed listening to the children’s albums when they were little, his father bought them for them.

At California State College in Long Beach, Carpenter studied composition. There she met Frank Pooler, director and composer. In addition, the composer, in 1968, wrote the lyrics for the Christmas classic “Merry Christmas Darling”. Even Richard met good friends, John Bettis, who co-wrote Richard’s songs. Richard Carpenter: career and achievements
Richard and Karen signed on April 22, 1969 with A&M Records. “Hopefully we’ll have some hits,” Herb Alpert told the two. Alpert offered them creative freedom in the recording studios, according to Richard, but after Offer, their first album, was released and didn’t sell much, there was speculation that some of the people at A&M were asking Alpert to free the band. Carpenters, but he believed in their talent and insisted on giving them another chance. In 1963, Alpert proposed that the Carpenters record a song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Although Richard only produced an arrangement at Alpert’s urging, his arranging skills clearly shone through in the finished product.
His arranging and musical skills, along with Karen’s vocals, helped the song climb to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed for a month. “(They long to be) by your side” she apparently received public attention overnight. While the song was instantly popular, according to Richard, the Carpenters themselves have not.
Sitting at home one night, Richard watched television and saw a commercial for Crocker National Bank. He recognized the voices of Paul Williams and Roger Nichols, two A&M songwriters on “We’ve Only Begun,” the commercial’s theme song. Richard made several calls to confirm his involvement and asked if there was a full version of the song that Williams said. However, Carpenter managed to turn the commercial bank jingle into an RIAA-certified gold record. On the Billboard Hot 100, it peaked at number 2 and has become a popular wedding song.

In 1984, Carpenter married Mary Rudolph, his adoptive cousin. His uncle, Mark Rudolph, was the Carpenters’ tour manager, as well as the radio call-in “contestant” on “Medley” on the Now & Then album. The couple dates back to the late 1970s. A young Mary made a guest appearance for the song “I Need to Be in Love” in the Carpenters’ promotional video.
