Saniya Chong is an American basketball player who currently plays for the Dallas Wings of the National Basketball Association, NBA, as a free agent. Chong also played for the University of Connecticut during his collegiate career, winning three national championships.
In 2012, while playing as a junior point guard, she ranked sixth in the nation with 32.1 points per game, averaging 9.4 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 4.9 steals per game, and led his high school team, Ossining to a 21-0 record.
Biography of Saniya Chong
Saniya Lynn Chong was born on June 27, 1994 in Ossining, New York. Her love for basketball began when she was just six years old and growing up in the Bronx, Chong often played with her older brother, Andrew, who literally helped motivate her.
Chong attended Ossining High School where she played under her coach Dan Ricci, who described her as “quiet but explosive”, extremely fast, and an outstanding offensive player on the basketball court.
Career
Saniya Chong started playing b-ball as a high school point guard, Ossining High School at age 16, where she averaged 34.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and 9.1 assists per game in her last season at school. By the time she was about to join UCONN basketball as a sophomore, Chong had already left quite a legacy.
- She was named Team USA Parade Basketball Player of the Year from 2012 to 2013;
- Honored as National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) Women’s Basketball Player of the Year;
- She won the 2012-2012 Gatorade New York Women’s Basketball Player of the Year award.
- Next, ESPN Hoopgurlz ranked her No. 75 recruiting and No. 3 recruiting in New York State.
Besides all of the above, Chong has scored at least 30 points in 51 of his 96 high school games. This represents 2988 points in four years of career. She also recorded nine points, six rebounds and four assists in the 2013 WBCA All-American game in New Orleans. And during his 2011-2012 junior campaign, the basketball star averaged 33.3 points and 9.7 rebounds.
Saniya Chong enrolled at the University of Connecticut where she graduated with a degree in sociology on May 6, 2017. In her freshman year, she appeared in 39 out of 40 total games, during which she earned four starting assignments as well a spot on the American Athletic Conference All-Freshman Team. By the time she entered her third year, she had scored 8-13 career points in the Huskies’ overtime loss to No. 6 Stanford.
In 2017, Chong scored his first points as a WNBA player with three on 5/20. In the third round, she was selected by the Dallas Wings as the 26th pick in that year’s WNBA Draft. To say that in 2015 her basketball career was at a standstill and she was skeptical about her decision to choose UConn gives a sense of the power and determination that she has within her. Even though she was a third-round pick and with no guarantee of getting a spot on the roster, Wong persisted. After playing 24 minutes in the first exhibition game, his skills were enough to land the WNBA job.
It comes shortly after graduating from college, and speaking of achieving what has always been his dream, Chong told friends, family and coaches, “Basically, I did it.” She said it was never easy, but everyone’s support and encouragement – the confidence she needed to get through.
Dallas assistant coach Bridget Pettis described her as a young woman with natural talent, one who could go to the basket, create her own shot and can definitely hit open shots. So the Dallas Wings will continue to develop her as a shooting guard.
Parents
She was born to biracial parents – her father, Andrew, is Chinese and her mother, Leslie, is African American.
In 2006, when Chong was in fifth grade, dirty brother Andrew allegedly committed suicide at the age of 20. He was 6 years older than Saniya Chong at that time. His family then moved from New York to live near a relative of his mother, Leslie, in Charlotte, North Carolina, to avoid the tragic memories of losing Andrew. They remained in this latter state until returning to Ossining, New York in 2009.
Memories of memories of her brother, Chondit Andrew truly inspires her to carry on. She describes it as a motivator, adding that although it was very difficult, she could not live in isolation from the world.
The young basketball star even got a tattoo on his left wrist that reads between 1985 and 2006 in memory of Andrew. According to her, he will always be on the ground with her.
