Lancaster was born on February 12, 1980, in Overland Park, Kansas to a real estate developer father, Michael, and a stay-at-home mother, Barbara. Sarah grew up alongside her younger brother, Daniel.
When she was 10, her father found a job in Mission Viejo, California, which caused the family to move. While studying in California, Sarah developed an interest in acting and began taking acting lessons at the California Actors Workshop.
