Thomas Jeffrey Hanks was born on July 9, 1956 in Amsterdam, Concord, California, United States. He is the third of four children born to Janet Marylyn and Amos Mefford Hanks and is of mixed English and Portuguese heritage.
As a child, Hanks’ family moved around so much that by the time he was about ten years old, he had lived in ten different cities. His passion for acting manifested itself in his high school days when he took on roles in school plays. In 1974 he completed his high school education at Skyline High School in Oakland and enrolled at Chabot College in Hayward, California. He later transferred to California State University, where he studied drama.
While in college, Tom Hanks took a three-year internship at the Great Lakes Theater Festival in Cleveland, Ohio. He honed his skills in production, lighting, design and stage management and decided to drop out of university in 1977. As an actor, Hanks won the 1978 Cleveland Critics Circle Award for Best Actor for his wonderful performance as Proteus in Shakespeare’s The Two Gentlemen of Verona.
A year later he moved to New York where he landed his first film role in a low budget film. He knows you are alone.
