Will Muschamp is a former American football player now head coach at the University of South Carolina. Muschamp, a native of Georgia, was also the head coach of the Florida Gators football team at the University of Florida.
Will Muschamp: Biography
Will was born William Larry Muschamp on August 3, 1971, in Rome, Georgia, but his family moved to Gainesville, Florida, where he received his elementary and high school education at Martha Manson Academy and Oak Hall High School, respectively.
When his family returned to Georgia Muschampa then attended the University of Georgia, where he became a member of the Georgia Bulldogs football team and played safety. While still in high school, Will was initiated into a social fraternity known as the Kappa Alpha Order (Gamma Chapter). There he earned a place on the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 1993 and before graduating in 1994 he was made a “co-captain”.
After graduating, Muschamp worked as an assistant graduate coach at Auburn University for the 1995 and 1996 seasons, while working under Wayne Hall and Bill Oliver, he earned his Masters in Education. He then served for a year each as a defensive backs coach for the University of Western Georgia and Eastern Kentucky University before embarking on a new career in 2000, as a defensive coordinator at Valdosta State University. .
In 2001, Muschamp joined Nicholas Lou Saban Jr (better known as Nick Saban) as the linebackers coach at Louisiana State University (LSU). A year later, he became the university’s defense coordinator. His 2003 defense was cited among the best in the nation. He even helped the country score in defense (11.0 PPG) and total defense (252.2 YPG) during a domestic league season. In fact, LSU won the BCS championship at the end of the season. The same was true in 2006, when Muschamp returned to the SEC as defensive coordinator for the Auburn Tigers.
Muschamp also served as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL).
