Today was the first day of fall break for Washoe County School District students, and while some of those students are probably taking advantage of getting to sleep in this week, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada wants families to know they are offering their Kid's Cafe Program to children who need it.
Most kids may love getting a break from the daily schoolwork, but there are students out there that depend on school to feed them every day. And now since school is out, some families may be struggling. That's where Kid's Cafe steps in and provides meals for children every day during break.
Jocelyn Lantrip, FBNN director of marketing and communications, says, "Kid's Cafe is one of the resources that families can access and it's throughout the week at several different programs and you don't have to be part of that program to eat."
The food bank gets all of their meals from the Washoe County Nutrition Services to offer healthy and fulfilling meals for each child, "They're the same meals that are served throughout the school year. So, we know that the meal pattern is followed, that it has dairy, and protein, and fruit and vegetable, and all the things that children need to have the proper nutrition to be ready to go back to school next week."
Meals are free for all children between ages 2 to 18. There are five different locations offered for families to stop by and eat at. Kid's Cafe meals must be eaten on site.
"It's heartbreaking when kids don't have the meals that they need and they're appreciative of those meals and families are appreciative because it's tough making ends meet, so five more meals during the week really does make a difference for families and children," Lantrip tells us.
Fall break meal sites will operate from today through the 6th.
